If you’re looking for an established Edmonton neighbourhood with mature trees, character homes and plenty to do nearby, Westmount is definitely worth exploring.
Located just west of Downtown, Westmount combines quiet residential streets with the shops, cafés, restaurants and galleries of 124 Street. It is one of those Edmonton neighbourhoods where older character homes, renovated properties and modern infill all exist within the same community.
A Neighbourhood with Character
Westmount is one of Edmonton’s older neighbourhoods, and its history is still visible throughout the area. Many of its residential streets developed during Edmonton’s early growth in the 1900s, and the community still has a strong collection of Craftsman and Foursquare-style homes.
Part of Westmount is also recognized as the Westmount Architectural Heritage Area, helping preserve the character of some of its most distinctive streets.
For buyers, that means Westmount feels very different from a newer suburban community. You’ll find mature landscaping, tree-lined streets, older architecture and homes that often have their own personality.
What Kind of Homes Can You Find in Westmount?
Westmount has a surprisingly diverse housing mix.
There are original character homes, renovated older properties, newer infill, duplexes, townhomes and condos. Because of that variety, prices can also differ significantly depending on the property type, lot, age, renovations and exact location.
That is why looking at comparable properties is especially important here a beautifully renovated character home and an older property only a few streets apart may have very different values.

The 124 Street Lifestyle
One of the biggest reasons people are drawn to Westmount is 124 Street.
The district is home to independent restaurants, cafés, shops, professional services and galleries. The 124 Street Business Association represents more than 100 businesses in the area.
It gives Westmount something many residential neighbourhoods do not have: you can live on a quiet street while still having coffee shops, restaurants and local businesses close by.
For buyers who like the convenience of central Edmonton but still want a house and backyard, that balance can be very appealing.
Close to Downtown and the River Valley
Westmount’s central location is another major advantage. The neighbourhood is close to Glenora, Parkview and the Brewery District, with Groat Road providing a convenient northsouth connection and easy access toward the University of Alberta area. Heading west, residents also have straightforward access to West Edmonton Mall, Costco and other major shopping destinations, while Downtown and the river valley remain just minutes away. This makes Westmount especially appealing for buyers who want to stay central without giving up convenient connections to west Edmonton.
Another change coming to the area is the Valley Line West LRT, which will run from Downtown toward Lewis Farms and includes a future stop around 124 Street and Stony Plain Road. The City currently expects major construction to be completed in 2028, followed by testing and commissioning before passenger service begins.
What Should Buyers Keep in Mind?
The age of Westmount homes is part of the neighbourhood’s appeal, but it also means buyers should look carefully at the condition and updates of each property.
For older homes, things like electrical, plumbing, sewer lines, foundation, windows, roofing and previous renovations may be important parts of your due diligence.
For newer infill properties, buyers may pay more attention to construction quality, lot size and surrounding redevelopment.
There isn’t one type of “Westmount home,” which is exactly why understanding the individual property matters so much here.
Is Westmount Right for You?
Westmount may be a great fit if you’re looking for an established central Edmonton neighbourhood with character homes, mature trees, local businesses and convenient access to Downtown.
It offers something quite different from Edmonton’s newer communities: history, walkability and a mix of old and new that continues to evolve.
